DdNA – Discuss do Not Argue

Learning by presenting

Learning by presenting makes sense and can be fun.
The students of two English  Q 11 courses – those of Mrs Gößwein and Mrs Wagner - were able to experience this last Friday (Oct, 14, 11).
The students of Mrs Wagner’s course had dived deeply into the events and causes of the British riots in summer. What they had found out was compiled and then related to different characters they had got across during their research.
In the end a talkshow was created that was both interesting and funny.

Guests of the talkshow, whose talkmaster did an excellent job (thanks to Tobis Gläser!), were Cindy (Max), an eleven-year-old girl, who had looted a shop and carried home a new mobile, her mother – both, alcoholic and quite disinterested in getting a job – (Matthias), a Hoodie, who thought the riots were great fun (Anna), a social worker who had joined into what all the others were doing and thus had taken part in the looting (Rebecca), two furious shop owners, one of them a Moroccan immigrant,  who couldn’t understand why the British youths were so disinterested in working (Ferdinand), and the other a hairdresser, who was seriously afraid that his shop might be attacked, too (Yannick). Another immigrant – who had come from Palestine looking for better opportunities in GB – reported about his frustrations about not being offered a good job (Dominik).
The more official side was represented by two policemen, who stated that they had been completely unable to cope with the situation, especially as their numbers had been reduced and – as British bobbies - they were inadequately equipped (Florian, Tobias Söllner). And, last but not least, a reporter and his cameraman, who had been attacked when filming the riots, told about their experiences (Paul, David).
A very special guest of this talkshow was Mr Cameron, who had great difficulties to answer all the urgent questions and respond to the nation’s frustrations – not an easy job these days (Niklas).

The second part of this show was a short introduction into the causes of the riots (Marcel and Jens), and a short introduction into a very special attempt at reducing the rate of minor crimes in GB: the ASBO (given by Cedric).

Mrs Gößwein’s course were an attentive audience and promised to entertain the other group in due time, as well.
